A Write Teacher(s) Review: Is This Tomorrow, by Caroline Leavitt

It’s FRIDAY!

So, lets talk about a Friday Reads that you should have on your bookshelf…Is This Tomorrow, by Caroline Leavitt.

Now, let it be known that I have read every novel that this wonderful wordsmith has ever penned.  I happen to find her to be a brilliant author.  Her novels draw you in completely – they are the type of stories that have you flipping the pages till the wee hours of the morning, because you just have to know what comes next.  So, you can imagine my delight when Is this Tomorrow hit the shelves.

Delight.

Because, once again, Leavitt has created a story that stays with you, that sticks with you. She has penned a story about love & loss, hope & faith, acceptance & discrimination all bound together in the pages of this book.

Here’s the blurb:

In 1956, when divorced, working-mom Ava Lark rents a house with her twelve-year-old son, Lewis, in a Boston suburb, the neighborhood is less than welcoming. Lewis yearns for his absent father, befriending the only other fatherless kids: Jimmy and Rose. One afternoon, Jimmy goes missing. The neighborhood in the era of the Cold War, bomb scares, and paranoia seizes the opportunity to further ostracize Ava and her son. Lewis never recovers from the disappearance of his childhood friend. By the time he reaches his twenties, he’s living a directionless life, a failure in love, estranged from his mother. Here’s what I loved:

Ava. Ava. Ava.  I think there needs to be more women like Ava today, tomorrow, and always.  She is fierce. She is loyal.  She does what’s right, no matter what.  I think there’s  a little bit of Ava in each and every one of us – the trick is letting her come to the surface.

Lewis took my breath away. His pain. His need to forget. His need to start over…it’s palpable. Raw. Real. I promise you that you will fall in love with him by the end of the story, and that his storyline will punch you in the gut – in the best way possible.

I’m not going to tell you anything else, as I don’t want to spoil the story.  But I will leave you with this –  urge you to get yourself a copy of this book. You will NOT be sorry.
